Phase Transitions in one-dimensional nonequilibrium systems

چکیده
The phenomenon of phase transitions in one-dimensional systems is discussed. Equilibrium systems are reviewed and some properties of an energy function which may allow phase transitions and phase ordering in one dimension are identified. We then give an overview of the one-dimensional phase transitions which have been studied in nonequilibrium systems. A particularly simple model, the zero-range process, for which the steady state is known exactly as a product measure, is discussed in some detail. Generalisations of the model, for which a product measure still holds, are also discussed. We analyse in detail a condensation phase transition in the model and show how conditions under which it may occur may be related to the existence of an effective long-range energy function. It is also shown that even when the conditions for condensation are not fulfilled one can still observe very sharp crossover behaviour and apparent condensation on a finite system. Although the zero-range process is not well known within the physics community, several nonequilibrium models have been proposed that are examples of a zero-range process, or closely related to it, and we review these applications here.

Hard core particle exclusion effects in low dimensional non - equilibrium phase transitions
We review the currently known universality classes of continuous phase transitions to absorbing states in nonequilibrium systems and present results of simulations and arguments to show how the blockades introduced by different particle species in one dimension cause new robust classes.

Earth's magnetosphere during substorms exhibits a number of characteristic features such as the signatures of low effective dimension, hysteresis, and power-law spectra of fluctuations on different scales. The largest substorm phenomena are in reasonable agreement with low-dimensional magnetospheric models and in particular those of inverse bifurcation. However, deviations from the low-dimensio...

Nonequilibrium systems can undergo continuous phase transitions between different steady states. These transitions are characterized by collective fluctuations over large distances and long times similar to the behavior of equilibrium critical points. They also can be divided into different universality classes according to their critical behavior. This dissertation considers two types of noneq...
متن کاملNonequilibrium Dynamics in Low Dimensional Systems
In these lectures we give an overview of nonequilibrium stochastic systems. In particular we discuss in detail two models, the asymmetric exclusion process and a ballistic reaction model, that illustrate many general features of nonequilibrium dynamics: for example coarsening dynamics and nonequilibrium phase transitions. As a secondary theme we shall show how a common mathematical structure, t...

– We calculate analytically the phase boundary for a nonequilibrium phase transition in a one-dimensional array of coupled, overdamped parametric harmonic oscillators in the limit of strong and weak spatial coupling. Our results show that the transition is reentrant with respect to the spatial coupling in agreement with the prediction of the mean field theory. Since the landmark paper of Onsage...
